Ad Sense Foul Ups – Where Did I Go Wrong
Chances are you’ve heard the hype about making hundreds from Ad Sense. Is it a myth or reality? Mostly, it is possible, however, few achieve it. This is because people are putting the code on their site with barely any thought and expecting to make hundreds from it.
How should you customize your ads to maximize your profits? Let’s talk about location first. Where should your ads be place for best performance? The center of the page is the best location followed by the upper left hand side bar, just below the header and directly below your text at the bottom of the page. Places you should avoid are the right hand side bar, above the header, and lower left hand sidebar.
Now, let’s think about style. Borders should be avoided since they provide a visual barrier between your text and the ads. To make the border invisible, make it the same color as your web page background. Also, the ad background should be the same color. If you are placing ads in different areas of your web page with different background, make sure you mimic this in your ads settings. Yes, you could be creating different ads for the same page. This is why templates or dynamics pages are important.
The title link should be the same color as all other title links in your site/area you are working with. This will draw the surfer’s eyes to it as a click-able link. The text should be the same color as the text you are working with. Also, the little URL at the bottom should be the same color as the text.
Here’s another trick, don’t treat your ads as ads and your customers won’t either. Pretend your ads are links to relevant content, which they are, and give them the same look and feel of your site. Web Surfer’s have developed something called banner blindness, which means they don’t even see ads anymore, particularly image ads. Their brain simply blacks out that area of your site.
A few more tips, I would avoid image ads when it comes to Ad Sense. Unless your site has mostly images that you can click on. Also, maximize your Ad Sense. Currently, you are allowed 3 text ads, 3 Ad link units; and so on these are the two I use. Make sure you use them all.
Ad links can be placed in navigational areas. Make the background and border the same as your site/area that you are putting the ad in. Make the link color the same as the links in the area. You can place a horizontal unit just below the header of your page. A vertical unit can be placed in any vertical navigational area you have, either above, below or within it.
When deciding on links per unit, take the font into consideration. If your font is larger, try 4 links per unit. If your font is smaller, try five links per unit. Also, you may want to underline your links so that they match better with the ad links.
