Online Keyword Research – Where To Do It
All internet marketers know keyword research is the foundation of getting traffic to your website. Having the correct keywords can mean the difference between success or failure of your business. So how do you go about doing this research? There are many services to choose from for those on a budget there are some excellent free keyword research tools and for those that have a little money to spend you can purchase some programs that will generally give you a more information. Below are just a few of free and paid services you can take a look at if you like.
Free services:
WordTracker
Trellian KeywordDiscovery
Google AdWords: Keyword Tool
Google Trends
Paid services:
WordTracker
Market Samurai
Keyword Spy
Keyword Discovery
WordZe
Most of the free services will provide you numbers on how many searches are occurring on a daily or monthly basis and may also include some trends throughout the year. They can also provide a little insight into the competition you might be running up against. The best way to really see your competition is to type your words with and without quotes into the search engine and see how many paid advertisers you see and how many competing pages you find. It’s always good to find a phrase to use that will bring you into the hundreds of thousands or even better under 100K when it comes to competing pages.
Another thing to look at while doing this research is to see how many paid advertisers you see, these are the ones that normally occur to the right of the page and are at the top and will say they are sponsored. You want to be able to find keywords that do have some paid advertisers because this will mean that at least there is a market but you want to keep it as low as possible so that you know you will be able to compete.
You will find that there are some great advantages to the paid versions because they will provide greater detail regarding the competition. In some cases they will be able to show you all the back links that competing websites have which can help you determine if there is possibility of knocking them off in the ranks. Most of these paid services will provide a trial period and I suggest you take it to see if it is worth your dollars and compare it to some of the free services.
Just a quick note research, when deciding on keywords to choose make sure and take a look at ‘long tail’ phrases these are keywords that consist of more than two words for example instead of ‘keyword research’ look for something more along the lines of ‘keyword research service’. This is a great alternative to the one or two word keywords because you will find lower competition for those phrases which means it will be easier to rank and if you are doing PPC the cost per click will more than likely be less.
Good luck in your keyword research and success to your online business.
